Roof Tent FAQs

General Roof Tent Questions

What is a roof tent?

A roof tent is a tent that you put on top of your car. It gives you a comfy and safe place to sleep. It’s easy to set up and pack away, keeping you off the ground and away from dirt, insects, or uneven terrain.

What are the advantages of having a roof tent?

Sleeping Up High
A roof tent lets you sleep on top of your car, keeping you off the ground away from mud and bugs. It’s more comfortable, safer, and gives you great views and fresh air.

Quick and Easy Setup
The tent is fast and easy to set up and pack away, and it has a built-in mattress, so you save time and hassle when camping.

Camp Wherever You Park

With a roof tent, you can camp almost anywhere your vehicle can go. You don’t need to find a flat spot like with a regular ground tent.

More Space Inside Your Car

Since the tent folds up on your roof, you have more room inside your car for other camping gear. With a roof tent, camping becomes something to look forward to!

Is a roof tent easy to use?

Yes – our rooftop tents are made for quick and easy setup. They pop open in just 10 seconds. Then you just attach the ladder and, if you want, the porch poles. That’s it – the whole setup takes less than a minute, and one person can easily do it. After that, just climb in, get comfy, and you’re ready to sleep under the stars.

How does a roof tent compare to a traditional ground tent?

Rooftop tents are way quicker to set up and pack away, tougher, and way more comfortable than regular ground tents. Since they’re mounted on your car, you can camp pretty much anywhere you can drive. You don’t need to look for a flat spot – just park and you’re good to go. Plus, you’re off the ground, so no dampness, no bugs crawling in, and no surprise visits from curious wildlife.

Of course, it all depends on your needs and preferences – some people still prefer the classic ground tent experience, and that’s totally fine too.

How does a roof tent compare to a campervan?

Rooftop tents are a much more affordable and flexible alternative to campervans. You get to keep your regular car, and when you're not using the tent, you can just take it off. Campervans do offer full indoor comfort and built-in amenities like a kitchen or shower – but many of those can be added to your setup with portable gear and accessories. In the end, it really just comes down to what suits your travel style best.

Where can I use a roof tent?

Roof tents work great in campgrounds, remote off-road spots, car parks and rest areas – basically anywhere you can legally and safely park your vehicle overnight. Just be sure to respect local regulations and the environment, and consider other people around you.

Can I take a roof tent to a campground?

Yes – most campgrounds gladly welcome rooftop tents, just like regular ground tents or campervans. Just be sure to follow the rules of each site regarding vehicle parking and camping setups. It’s a good idea to contact the site ahead of time – some places might count you as a tent, others as a camper, depending on how they handle rooftop setups.

Vehicle Compatibility & Roof Bars

Will the tent fit my car?

Most likely, yes. It comes down to two things: whether your car can be fitted with roof bars (which is possible on most vehicles), and what your roof load limit is. If both are good, you're very likely good to go. Most cars can take a lightweight roof tent, such as the Peak Lite as a minimum.

Not sure? You can take a look at our quick guide to learn the basics or send us a message — we’re happy to help you check compatibility.

How do vehicle roof load limits work?

Your vehicle’s roof load limit tells you how much weight your roof can safely carry, and there are two types to know about.

  • Dynamic load is the maximum weight your roof can handle while driving – this includes the tent and any extra gear.

  • Static load is the weight it can hold when parked, which is usually much higher and rarely a problem. Car roofs are designed to withstand this kind of weight, and in fact, they must be strong enough to support the vehicle’s own weight in the rare event of a rollover.

You’ll usually find these limits in your vehicle’s manual, or with a quick online search. Just make sure the total weight of your setup (roof bars, tent, any extra gear) stays within the dynamic load rating — it’s key for safety on the road.

What about the weight of people inside the tent?

A lot of people ask how a car roof can support the extra weight of people inside a roof tent, especially since it seems to go over the vehicle’s roof load limit. The good news is that the limit manufacturers give usually refers to the dynamic load — that’s the weight the roof can safely carry while driving. When your car is parked, the roof can actually hold much more — often at least five times the dynamic load limit.

Roof tents are designed with this in mind, so the weight of the people inside is safely spread out and supported by the roof once the car is stationary. Plus, car roofs are built to handle this kind of weight — in fact, they need to be strong enough to hold the whole vehicle’s weight in case of a rollover, which is pretty reassuring!

Can I use the tent on a small car?

Absolutely! Roof tents can be installed on a wide range of vehicles, including hatchbacks, compact SUVs, and even trucks. The main requirement is having properly installed roof bars that are rated to carry the tent’s weight, and a roof that meets the dynamic load limit. Many of our customers use roof tents on smaller cars with great success, and some lighter roof tent models (like the Peak Lite) are even designed specifically with smaller cars in mind.

Just be sure to check your vehicle’s manual for the dynamic roof load limit and compare it with the tent’s weight to make sure everything is compatible. If you’re unsure, we’re always here to help your car's compatibility.

Will the weight of the tent affect my car?

There may be some slight differences in how your vehicle performs, such as a small reduction in acceleration. However, roof tents typically weigh less than the average person, so these changes are minimal. Modern cars are built to safely handle the added weight and aerodynamic changes caused by a roof tent, but it’s always a good idea to drive a bit more carefully until you get used to how your vehicle feels with the tent installed.

Does the tent affect fuel consumption?

Yes, there is usually a slight impact on fuel efficiency, depending on your vehicle and driving conditions. The main reasons are the extra weight and changes in aerodynamics caused by the roof tent. However, since the tent usually weighs less than an average passenger, the added weight alone isn’t significant. For many, this small increase in fuel use is a fair trade-off for the convenience and comfort a roof tent provides.

How do I choose the right roof bars?

Every car is different, and depending on your roof type — whether it has flush rails, raised rails, or something else — you’ll need a specific kind of roof bars that fit just right. There’s no one-size-fits-all because each vehicle and roof design requires different bars to ensure a safe and secure fit.

Many stores, both online and in-person, have tools to help you find the right roof bars based on your exact car model. We’ve also shared useful tips about choosing roof bars in our quick fitting guide to make the process easier.

And if you need a hand, we’re always here to help you pick the best option — just send us a message.

Are two roof bars enough?

Yes, you generally only need two strong roof bars to safely carry a roof tent. While most roof tents work perfectly with just two bars, some people choose to add a third bar for extra security — especially if they plan on doing heavy off-roading — but this isn’t usually necessary.

Can I mount the tent on a roof rack?

Yes, the tent can be installed on most roof racks, provided the rack is securely mounted and rated to carry the weight of the tent.

When using full roof racks, make sure there is enough flat space and no raised edges or obstacles that could interfere with the mounting brackets. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications for weight limits and compatibility.

Every setup is different, so we assess each case individually to ensure a safe and secure fit. If you're unsure, feel free to send us a photo of your roof setup — we're happy to advise.

Can I use the tent if my car has a sunroof?

Yes, roof tents are generally compatible with vehicles that have a sunroof. Just keep in mind that once the tent is mounted, the sunroof will be covered and can’t be opened or used. The tent sits on your roof bars, which normally don’t interfere with the sunroof itself. Still, it’s always a good idea to double-check with your car or tent manufacturer to make sure everything fits safely.

Can I use the tent on a convertible?

In most cases, no — convertibles usually aren’t built to support roof bars or carry the weight of a roof tent safely. The roof structure simply isn’t designed for it. That said, some hard-top convertibles might handle a very lightweight tent, but it really depends on the specific vehicle. Always check with both the tent and car manufacturer before trying to mount a tent on a convertible.

Delivery & Installation

How quickly is the tent delivered?

Delivery across the UK mainland typically takes 7-10 business days, depending on your location. Check our delivery information for more details, and feel free to get in touch if you have any special requirements — we’re happy to help.

Can one person install the tent?

You can handle most of the setup on your own, but when it comes to lifting the tent onto your roof bars, we strongly recommend having a second person to help — the tent weighs between 60–72 kg. If you don’t have someone to assist, you’ll need lifting equipment to get it up safely. Once it’s on the roof, the rest of the installation (attaching the brackets and securing everything) is straightforward and can be easily done by one person.

What do I need to install a roof tent?

To install the roof tent, you'll need a compatible roof rack or roof bars that can support the tent’s weight. The tent comes with everything you need for installation, including metal brackets, nuts, bolts, a spanner and a hexagon key.

How is the tent installed on the car?

The tent comes fully assembled, which is why the installation is a simple process from start to finish. It attaches directly to your roof bars using metal brackets — no drilling, no modifications to your vehicle, and no special tools needed. Everything you need for installation is included in the box.

Setting it up is simple and usually takes less than an hour, even if you’ve never done it before. While most of the process can be done by one person, lifting the tent onto the roof absolutely requires two people due to its size and weight. Once you get the hang of it, installation takes even less time.

Comfort, Living Space & Daily Use

Is the tent comfortable to sleep in?

Absolutely! Our tents come with a high-density foam mattress and an anti-condensation mat underneath for extra comfort. Many users find it more comfortable than traditional ground tents since you’re sleeping elevated on a flat, stable surface. Plus, the height helps with better airflow and insulation, so you don’t have to worry about uneven, rocky, or damp ground beneath you.

Is a roof tent warm inside?

Roof tents are well-insulated and designed to keep you warm. The thick fabric and built-in foam mattress help retain heat, and since you’re elevated off the ground, you avoid the cold and damp that comes from sleeping directly on the earth. For colder conditions, we recommend using a sleeping bag rated for low temperatures.

How big is the tent inside?

The tent fits 2 adults comfortably, with room to stretch and sit upright. There’s also space for small items and gear inside.

How many people fit in the roof tent?

Our tents comfortably sleep two adults.

Can tall people fit in the tent?

Yes, absolutely — the mattress is long enough for people up to 6'7" (200 cm), so most tall campers will be perfectly comfortable. And if you're sleeping solo, you can lie diagonally, which gives you even more space — making height almost a non-issue.

Does the tent include a mattress?

Yes — the mattress is built-in and included with the tent. The Lite model comes with a 5 cm thick foam mattress, while the Peak has a slightly thicker 7 cm version. Both have a washable cover and an anti-condensation layer underneath for added comfort and ventilation.

Is the ladder included?

Yes — every tent comes with a 2.3-meter telescopic aluminum ladder. It’s adjustable to suit different vehicle heights and attaches to either side for easy access. Depending on your car’s height, the ladder may also play a role in setting up the tent.

How do you climb into the tent?

Roof tents are accessed via a telescopic ladder that hooks securely onto the edge of the tent and extends to the ground. The ladder is height-adjustable to suit different vehicles, and its wide, flat rungs make climbing easy and comfortable. The base is non-slip to ensure a stable setup on different surfaces.

Can I use a roof tent alone?

Yes — our roof tents are designed for easy setup and takedown by just one person. Thanks to built-in gas struts, opening the tent is quick and effortless. Just unlock the latches, lift the tent slightly, and it pops open by itself. When you’re ready to close it, simply pull the cord to bring down.

Can I bring my dog inside?

Absolutely! Dogs are definitely welcome in our roof tents. Small to medium dogs can either be carried up the ladder or trained to climb it with some help. Some owners even use ladder attachments to help their pets get inside more easily. Just make sure your dog is always supervised and secure in the tent to prevent any accidental falls or jumps.

Can I leave bedding inside when I close the tent?

Yes — one of the best features of the Peak model! You can store your duvet, pillows and blankets inside, making mornings and evenings quicker and easier. (Please note, this option isn’t available on the Lite version.)

Weather, Care & Storage

Is the tent waterproof?

Yes, the tent is fully waterproof and built to keep you dry and comfortable, even in challenging weather. It’s made from durable 280g ripstop canvas with a 3000 mm PU coating to protect against heavy rain. All seams are carefully sealed and reinforced to keep the rain out.

Can I use a roof tent in bad weather?

Yes – a roof tent is designed to handle challenging weather, including rain, wind, and even light snow. They’re made with tough, waterproof materials and sturdy frames to keep you protected. That said, like any outdoor gear, roof tents have their limits. Always check the weather forecast before your trip, and if conditions get extreme, it’s best to pack down the tent or find a more sheltered spot for your safety.

Can the tent be heated?

Yes — staying warm in a roof tent during colder months is absolutely possible. While roof tents provide decent insulation, when it gets chilly, it’s a good idea to bring extra layers like a winter sleeping bag, thermal clothing, or even a hot water bottle. Some people also use a portable electric heater that’s safe for tent use, but proper ventilation is essential, and safety instructions should always be followed. Never use gas heaters inside the tent, as they pose a serious risk of carbon monoxide buildup.

Will condensation build up?

Yes, condensation can build up inside any tent — including roof tents — especially in cold or humid conditions. It happens when warm, moist air from your breath meets cooler surfaces inside the tent. To help reduce this, the tent is designed with a mesh ventilation panel, breathable materials, and an anti-condensation mat. For best results, make sure to keep at least one window slightly open to allow airflow. Good ventilation is the most effective way to prevent moisture buildup.

Can I pack the tent away when it’s wet?

Yes — you can pack it away wet if you need to, but try to dry it out as soon as possible. If the weather doesn’t allow drying beforehand, make sure to shake off as much water as you can before closing the tent. Then, be sure to open it up within 24 hours to let it air out and prevent mold or mildew from developing.

Can the tent grow mold?

Mold can develop only if the tent is stored wet for extended periods. After a rainy trip, make sure to fully open and dry your tent before storing it long-term. If it gets wet during your travels, try to air it out as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours. Regular cleaning and proper maintenance will also help keep mold at bay.

How should I take care of my roof tent?

To keep your roof tent in excellent condition, clean the fabric regularly using mild soap and water, and always let it dry completely before packing it away. After each trip, check for any signs of damage. Proper maintenance also includes airing the tent out to prevent moisture buildup. Avoid storing it wet to protect against mold and mildew. For added protection, we recommend applying a waterproofing treatment once a year — brands like Fabsil or Nikwax work really well.

Can I keep the tent on the car all year round?

Yes, the tent is made from durable, weather-resistant materials designed to withstand year-round use. One of the great things about a roof tent is that you can leave it on your vehicle, ready for spontaneous adventures anytime. However, if you don’t plan to use it during the winter or for extended periods, it’s a good idea to remove it and store it dry. This helps protect the tent and prevents corrosion on your roof bars, ultimately extending the lifespan of both.

How should I store my roof tent when not in use?

When you’re not using your roof tent for a while, it’s best to store it in a dry, cool place to protect it from moisture, dust, and sunlight. Make sure the tent is completely dry before storing to avoid mold and mildew. Some people prefer to keep it mounted on their vehicle, ensuring it’s securely closed, while others take it off and store it indoors, especially during the winter months.

Can the tent be stored standing on its side?

Yes, you can store your roof tent on its side as long as it’s properly supported and resting securely on a soft surface like foam, a mat, or cardboard to prevent damage. Just make sure the tent is completely dry before storing it, and keep it in a clean and dry area.

Roof Tent Safety

Is it safe to sleep in a roof tent?

Yes! Roof tents are designed to offer a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Being elevated keeps you off damp ground and away from insects or curious animals. They’re firmly mounted to your roof rack and built with a solid, stable base that holds up well even in windy conditions. That said, you're still outdoors, so it's always wise to stay aware of your surroundings — some people feel more comfortable staying at established campsites, especially in unfamiliar areas.

How secure is the tent on the car?

Absolutely! It's firmly mounted to your roof bars using strong steel brackets and secure fixings. Once it's attached, it stays put — even at high speeds on the motorway, in strong winds, or when you're heading off-road. You can drive without worrying about a thing.

Is the tent safe when overhanging off the car?

Yes, a bit of overhang is totally fine and nothing to worry about. When your roof bars are positioned correctly, the weight of the tent is evenly spread out across the structure. It might look like it's hanging over a bit, but that's completely normal — and totally safe. You can rest easy knowing it's stable and designed for comfortable, secure sleeping.

How fast can I drive with a roof tent on my car?

It's best to keep your speed moderate when driving with a roof tent — usually no more than 60–75 mph. Many tent manufacturers provide specific speed recommendations in their user guides, often around 70 mph, so it's important to follow those guidelines, along with any local traffic laws. Slower speeds not only improve safety, but also help with fuel efficiency and reduce wind resistance while driving.

How can I prevent someone from opening my roof tent?

When your roof tent is closed, it can be secured with a padlock to prevent anyone from opening it. For extra protection, you can also use anti-theft nuts to stop someone from removing the tent from your roof bars. These simple additions give you peace of mind when leaving your vehicle parked and unattended.

Can someone steal my rooftop tent?

Roof tents don’t usually get stolen, but since they’re valuable, it’s smart to take some precautions. Your tent is securely attached to the roof bars with strong brackets and bolts, so it’s not going anywhere easily. For extra peace of mind, you can add anti-theft nuts, a security alarm or a GPS tracker. It’s also a good idea to consider insuring your tent to protect it against theft or damage.

Will the tent affect my existing car insurance?

A roof tent can sometimes be seen as a vehicle modification, so it’s a good idea to check with your car insurance provider to see if it affects your policy. It usually doesn’t make a big difference, but every insurer is different — and it’s always best to let them know about any changes to your vehicle.

Although roof tents are temporary and removable, it's still advisable to inform your insurer. Most providers only require notification for permanent modifications, but checking in advance will give you peace of mind and help avoid any surprises in case of a claim.

Can I insure the tent?

Yes, roof tents can often be insured — either through your existing car or home insurance, or by adding extra cover. It’s a good idea to check with your current provider to see what’s already included. If it’s not covered, there are specialist insurers for outdoor and camping gear who might offer a suitable policy. We always recommend giving them a quick call to make sure the cover fits your needs before buying.

Can the tent damage my car?

No — a roof tent won’t damage your car, as long as it’s installed correctly and used with the right roof bars. Just make sure everything is securely fitted and that you’re not exceeding your vehicle’s roof load limit. Always follow the instructions in the manual and use the provided mounting hardware. If you're new to roof tents, our quick guide is a great way to get familiar with the basics.
